Convocation opens academic year

(Aug. 13, 2001)   —   Chancellor William Muse welcomed faculty members back to campus and presented awards to outstanding advisers as the new academic year officially got under way Monday (Aug. 13) at East Carolina University.

Muse, who became chancellor on Aug. 1, quoted from the inaugural address of the university’s first president, Robert H. Wright: “… we must see that those who attend this institution are well prepared for their work. This is not a matter of sentiment, neither are these the words of an enthusiast, but it is a duty we owe to our children. They are under no obligations to us. They have been entrusted to us for our care and keeping.”

Muse said, “I hope all of you on the faculty, and all of us at ECU, hold this duty , this privilege, foremost in out sight as we undertake our work anew this academic year.”

Classes begin Wednesday at the university for an anticipated 18,000 students. Faculty meetings and student orientation activities were scheduled throughout Monday and Tuesday.

Muse noted that the General Assembly still has not reached agreement on a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1. “I am hopeful,” he said, “that our legislators will find the courage to enact appropriate revenue enhancement measures so that further cuts in support for education will not have to be implemented.”

Muse presented advising awards to four faculty members: Patricia Anderson of the Department of Elementary and Middle Grades Education in the School of Education; Patricia Clark of the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences; Jane Teleki of the Department of Child Development and Family Relations in the School of Human Environmental Sciences; and Douglas W. Kruger Jr. of the Department of Construction Management in the School of Industry and Technology.

Each recipient receives a $500 award.
