Chancellor Muse plans town visits

(Aug. 2, 2001)   —   Incoming East Carolina University Chancellor William V. Muse said today (Aug. 2) that he plans to tour the eastern region of the state to learn what citizens expect from his new institution.”One of the first things I want to do is meet people in eastern North Carolina–both at the university as well as in the larger community,” Muse said as he and his wife, Marlene, visited with reporters during his second day on the job.

“ECU is a university that serves the entire region, and I need to know the aspirations of the people and what they need from us,” he said.

He said he will visit all the major cities in the region and many of the smaller ones during his first year in office. The visits will begin next month and will include stops at public schools, community colleges, universities, military installations, historic and cultural sites and major commercial locations. He also plans meetings with elected officials.

Muse described ECU as a “great university doing a good job” and said he will look for ways to build on its solid foundation and help it achieve greater national prominence.

Marlene Muse said she plans to be involved with ECU students. “I’m very interested in how students approach volunteerism,” she said. “If you don’t learn about volunteering when you’re young, you probably won’t pick it up later.”

She said she also will be involved with the Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity. “Those two have been dear to my heart for years.”
