Layman earns national association fellow status

GREENVILLE, N.C.   (Apr. 3, 2001)   —   Dr. Elizabeth J. Layman has been awarded the designation of Fellow of the American Health Information Management Association. Layman is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Health Information Management in the School of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University.

Layman is one of the first two individuals in the nation to be awarded the fellow designation by AHIMA. The fellowship program was established in October 1999 and is awarded to AHIMA members who make significant and sustained contributions to the profession of Health Information Management.

The fellowship status is a lifetime recognition subject to continuing AHIMA membership and compliance with the association’s code of ethics. Layman came to ECU in July 1996 from the Medical College of Georgia and succeeded Peggy Wood, who organized the HIM department at ECU and retired after 26 years with ECU.

Layman received a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Minnesota, her medical record administration certificate in 1989, a master’s degree in organizational leadership in 1989 and a doctorate in higher education in 1995.

In addition to AHIMA, Layman is also a member of the National Association for Health Care Quality.
