ECU Pirates and Miami Hurricanes move game to Raleigh

In the Hurricane Floyd aftermath, East Carolina University has moved the football game scheduled in Greenville Saturday against the University of Miami to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Game time is still set for 6 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Mike Hamrick, director of athletics, said that it is not feasible to plan to play the game at ECU’s Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

“Both electricity and water are at risk in Greenville for the next few days,” Hamrick said. “Facilities and law enforcement officials are already stretched thin. We didn’t want to put our fans in harm’s way or add to the burdens of recovering from the disaster that is all around us.”

Hamrick said university officials are working with Red Cross officials to encourage fans to bring donations of food, clothing and cash to the game.

“I also would like to thank our colleagues at North Carolina State University for agreeing to host this game,” he said. “This is an exceptionally generous decision on their part, and we are grateful to them.”

Because of Hurricane Floyd, the ECU football team remained in Columbia, S.C., after the game against the University of South Carolina on Saturday. Meanwhile, ECU crews are working to restore the physical facilities on the Greenville campus to normal operating conditions.

All facilities services staff members have been asked to report to work. Other staff members should call the university hotline at 252-328-0062. Classes have been canceled for the entire week. Parents Weekend events, which were scheduled on campus this weekend, also have been canceled.
