Governor appoints Talton to ECU board of trustees

Gov. Jim Hunt has appointed James R. Talton Jr. of Raleigh, a longtime, active supporter of East Carolina University to the ECU Board of Trustees. He replaces Walter Williams of Greenville who recently resigned.

Talton is a retired managing partner of KPMG LLP, an accounting firm in Raleigh, and is a certified public accountant in both North and South Carolina. At East Carolina University, he is a member of the School of Business Advisory Council, the Foundation Board of Directors and Executive Committee and the University Scholars Campaign Executive Committee.

“Jim Talton is a strong leader with a deep committement to building a stronger ECU,” Hunt said. “For years, he has been a driving force behind ECU’s progress, and has worked tirelessly to boost the university. He’s got what it takes to help lead ECU into the next century as an outstanding institution that prepares its students for success in the workplace by providing them the best education possible.”

A Wilson native, Talton has received the Distinguished Service Award from the ECU Alumni Association and was an honorary inductee into Beta Gamma Sigma. He is a member of Delta Sigma Phi. In 1987 he received the Citizen of the Year award from the Greater Greenville Chapter of NAA and in 1986 he received the Boss of the Year Award from the Greenville Jaycees.

In addition, Talton is a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors and Executive and Finance Committees for the Boys and Girls Club of Raleigh. He is the vice chairman and the chairman-elect of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership. Talton received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration-Accounting from ECU in 1965. He participated in the Stanford University Partner Development Program in 1981 and the KPMG International Partner Development in 1990. He is married to Myrtle Weaaver and the couple has two children, James R., III and Elizabeth Paige.

The East Carolina University Board of Trustees is composed of 13 members that promote the development of the university. The Board of Governors elect eight members and four are appointed by the Governor. The student body president is an ex-officio member. Members serve staggered four-year terms. Talton’s term expires June 30, 2001.
