Gilbert named dean of School of Health and Human Performance

Dr. Glen G. Gilbert, chair of the Department of Health Education and Promotion, has been named dean of the School of Health and Human Performance at East Carolina University. Gilbert’s appointment, effective Aug. 1, was confirmed by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors on May 14.

He will succeed Dr. Christian Zauner, who is retiring after five years as dean. Gilbert joined the ECU faculty as a professor and chair of his department in 1997. Dr. Richard Ringeisen, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said, “After a national search for a new dean, I was delighted that the best candidate was already on our campus. Dr. Gilbert has provided outstanding leadership for his department and I am confident that the school will continue its excellent work under his deanship.

“I know that he and the school are anticipating the opening of the new doctoral program in bioenergetics in the fall. His experience with doctoral programs at the University of Maryland will be invaluable,” Ringeisen said.

Gilbert said, “The School of Health and Human Performance has an outstanding faculty and a very bright future. I am very proud to be asked to serve as dean. I am excited about the opportunity to help move the school forward into the new millennium.”

Gilbert holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Before coming to ECU, he was chair of the Department of Health Education at the University of Maryland for 11 years. He also was faculty member and administrator at Portland State University and served as assistant director of the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. He is the author of four books and more than 60 articles in scholarly journals.
