ECU Celebrates Homecoming

Everything old is new again when East Carolina University celebrates Homecoming 1998 with the theme, “Purple Pride Through the Years….Retro ’70s, ’80s, & ’90s.”

Activities are planned throughout the week, culminating with the annual Homecoming Parade and football game on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Festivities will get under way Monday, Oct. 5, with the announcement of the Homecoming Court at 7 p.m. in the Great Room of the Mendenhall Student Center.

Tuesday, Pirate fans young and old will be able to meet their favorite Pirates at the Plaza Mall during Autograph Night from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday will be the day for banner judging on campus, as well as a day to look back at the ’80s when Barry Drake presents ’80s Rock Music in the Video Age, at 8 p.m. in Hendrix Theatre in the Mendenhall Student Center. “Piratefest,” the all-out pep rally, will be Thursday from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. outside the brick patio of Mendenhall.

Friday, alumni will be welcomed back with campus tours, and tennis and golf tournaments at the Greenville Country Club. That evening the 1998 Outstanding Alumni will be honored with a reception and dinner in Mendenhall, followed by music on the new Joyner Library Sonic Plaza.

Activities on Saturday begin with an open house and brunch at the Taylor-Slaughter Alumni Center on Fifth Street at 9 a.m. The parade, which runs along Fifth Street, begins at 10 a.m. A pre-game luncheon and tailgate party begins at 12:30 p.m. at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Kickoff for ECU’s match-up with the University of Alabama – Birmingham is at 3:30 p.m. A post-game social and dance will begin at 8 p.m. at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Greenville.

An information tent will be set up on the campus mall Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until noon. Alumni can pick up official Homecoming ’98 name tags at the tent on Saturday, or at the Taylor-Slaughter Alumni Center on Friday from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m., and use them for special discounts and offers from area businesses throughout the weekend.
