Scientists to speak at ECU Friday

The Burroughs Wellcome Distinguished Lectures in the Sciences will be held Friday (March 29) at East Carolina University and will feature talks by three leading researchers.

The program starts at 2 p.m. in room 201 of the Flanagan (Chemistry) Building and is open to the public. The evening presentation is at 7:30 p.m. in Mendenhall Student Center. The speakers and their topics are: Philip Portoghese of the University of Minnesota, “The Role of an ‘Address’ in the Molecular Recognition of Ligands by Opioid Receptors”; Celia Bonaventura of Duke University, “Recent Discoveries on the Uptake and Transport of Nitric Oxide by Hemoglobin”; and Paul L. Feldman of Glaxo Wellcome, Inc., “Organic Chemistry Aiding Basic Biological Research: Understanding Nitric Oxide Synthase.”

The Burroughs Wellcome Company, through an endowment made to ECU in 1995, established the lectureship program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Departments of Biology and Chemistry are the co-sponsors for the program.
