Makuck to deliver ECU commencement address
(Nov. 29, 1994) — Story writer and poet Peter L. Makuck of Greenville is the featured speaker for East Carolina University’s fall graduation program Dec. 10 in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Dr. Makuck, an ECU English professor, will address about 2,000 ECU seniors and graduate students and their families at 10 a.m.
Prior to his presentation, a band from the ECU School of Music will perform at 9:15 a.m. The academic procession will start at 9:45 a.m.
A native of New London, Connecticut, Makuck joined the ECU English faculty in 1976 after completing his doctorate degree at Kent State University. He said his arrival in eastern North Carolina rekindled his love for the water and for boats. Over the years, he produced numerous short stories and poems . Many of them have nautical themes. Some of his poems include “Tar River Again,” “East of Cape Fear,” and “The Sunken Lightship Off Frying Pan Shoals.”
His books include “Breaking and Entering,” a collection of short stories, and three collections of poems including “The Sunken Lightship,” published in 1990. He also edits “Tar River Poety,” and directs the ECU Poetry Forum.

In 1993, Makuck was awarded Charity Randall Citation from the International Poetry Forum. He was the 1988 winner of the Zoe Kincaid Brock Memorial Award, the highest honor given by the North Carolina Poetry Society.
With the renovation of Minges Coliseum preventing an indoor ceremony, ECU officials said the time and date of the commencement could change if there is inclement weather on Saturday morning. Some alternatives include postponing the commencement until 2 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday, or cancelling the ceremony and holding a single, larger commencement next May.
