ECU announces fall enrollment

(Sept. 1, 1994)   —   Enrollment for the fall semester at East Carolina University is 17,570, according to the ECU Registrar’s Office that released its figures today. The total is down slightly from last fall’s count of 17,728 and is also below the record high of 17,757 set in 1992. But the dip comes as no surprise to ECU officials.

Chancellor Richard R. Eakin says the enrollment total coincides with the reduction in the number of high school graduates statewide. He said the pool of high school graduates reached a low point last spring and will increase only slightly during the next few years.“Our recruitment of transfer students and non traditional students will continue, but the overall enrollment increases each year over the next few years will not parallel those that we have had in the recent past. In fact, it is likely that the university enrollment will remain unchanged through this decade,” he said.

While the overall enrollment dropped slightly, the number of students attending ECU as graduate students climbed. The registrar reported a total of 3,070 graduate students this fall which is 118 more than the total from a year ago.

“This clearly furthers our graduate mission and bodes well for our future development,” said Eakin.

The 1994 figures include 10,114 women and 7,456 men. The number of women students increased by 73 from a year ago while the number of men fell by 231.

Fall semester classes began Aug. 24. Registration for students ended on Tuesday.
