ECU Nursing professor appointed to FDA advisory committee

An ECU College of Nursing faculty member has been appointed to serve on a committee for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the nation’s foremost authority on protecting public health through regulations and recommendations on drug use.
Dr. Maura McAuliffe, a professor and director of the College of Nursing’s Nurse Anesthesia program, was appointed to serve on the FDA’s Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee for three years. Her term began in March and will continue through 2022.

The Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee reviews and evaluates data concerning the safety and effectiveness of marketed and investigational drug products for use in anesthesiology and surgery and provides recommendations to the FDA commissioner. This will include evaluations of drug products including abuse-deterrent opioids and issues related to opioid abuse.
“I was honored to be selected to serve on this committee and hope my participation in evaluating the risks and benefits associated with the approval process for anesthetics and analgesics will help the FDA advance the public health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs made available to public,” McAuliffe said.
McAuliffe is one of 11 voting members on the committee, whom are selected by the commissioner or a designee from recommendations provided by authorities in the fields of anesthesiology, surgery, epidemiology or statistics and related specialties. She is joined on the committee by other faculty members from prestigious schools of medicine and public health around the nation, as well as leadership from major medical centers and health care organizations.
“We’re so pleased that Dr. McAuliffe has been appointed to this important committee that impacts the health and safety of the citizens of our country,” said Dr. Sylvia Brown, dean of the College of Nursing. “This appointment demonstrates Dr. McAuliffe’s outstanding professional reputation and her dedication to the health and well-being of patients nationwide.”
