GREENVILLE, N.C. (09/03/2026) — East Carolina University’s fall 2026 enrollment remains above 27,000 students, supported by growth in graduate programs, transfer enrollment and the continued expansion of the online Flight Path degree program.

Preliminary census day numbers collected on the 10th day of classes, Friday, Aug. 28, show 27,206 students enrolled for fall 2026. This marks the third consecutive fall in which ECU has seen overall enrollment growth and is the largest total enrollment since fall 2021.

Included in this year’s total are 3,881 first-year students. While slightly lower than last year, the figure reflects the changing college-going behavior of traditional college-age students along with the growing reality of demographic change leading to fewer high school graduates.

Highlights of ECU’s fall 2026 enrollment include an increase in graduate and professional program enrollment, with 5,514 enrolled in all graduate programs, up 1% from last year. Transfer student enrollment also grew — with 1,992 new transfer students enrolled this fall, a 2.3% increase from last year and the largest incoming transfer class in university history.

Flight Path experienced significant growth this year with 1,052 students enrolled in six online programs, an increase of 347 students or 49.2% from the same time last fall. Flight Path launched in February 2024 with 31 students. Supported through Project Kitty Hawk, ECU’s Flight Path program is designed to help adult learners earn bachelor’s degrees without leaving their home communities, degrees that can lead to individual career advancement while supporting North Carolina’s workforce needs.

The university continues to see strong student success outcomes. First-to-second-year retention rates for both first-time and transfer students have remained above 80% for four consecutive years. The retention rate for the fall 2025 first-time, full-time student cohort is 82.6%.

“I’m so pleased more than 27,000 students have chosen ECU this fall for their educational experience,” said Chancellor Philip Rogers. “From strengthening advising and support services to improving retention and expanding academic pathways, the ECU community is committed to helping every student thrive whether they are a first-year student living on campus, a student in one of our high demand graduate programs, or an online learner through Flight Path.”

“Across the country, families and employers are asking hard questions about the value of a college degree,” said Rogers. “At ECU, the answer is clear. Our university provides an education that is built around serving the current and future needs of our community and empowering our students with the skills to lead and serve.”

In addition to Flight Path programs, ECU has continued to grow transfer pathways and agreements with community colleges. During the past year, ECU signed 162 new and renewed bilateral agreements with North Carolina community colleges. These agreements align community college programs with ECU degree pathways, helping students transfer credits and complete undergraduate degrees efficiently.

Enrollment figures become official following certification by the UNC System Office.
