Brinkley-Lane Scholar: Peyton Denton

Peyton Denton was familiar with East Carolina University partly through the influence of his older brother, Tanner, who graduated in December. However, it was during the college application process that he learned more about ECU and found that it aligned with his future plans.

“When the college application arrived, I began to research deeper into ECU, which is when I found the (ECU motto) “Servire” (to serve). The community aspect is what drove me and attracted me to ECU.”

That initial attraction caused him to dig deeper. ECU’s supportive environment and research opportunities available as a Research 1 (R1) institution sealed his decision.

“I decided to choose ECU because as I continued to learn more about the university through events and the Brinkley-Lane interview, I enjoyed the close-knit environment that ECU provided and the support system that follows,” Denton said. “Additionally, the prestigious research and biology programs aided my choice.”

Denton is one of 21 incoming Brinkley-Lane Scholars, which is the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. Housed in the Honors College, the four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Both in-state and out-of-state recipients receive a fully funded education, covering the cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and high impact experiences. Included in the scholarship is the ability to explore the world and pursue additional educational opportunities with a $5,000 study abroad stipend and a $3,000 enrichment scholarship. Scholars benefit from access to an array of leadership opportunities, research with award-winning faculty and a robust alumni network.

“Being a Brinkley-Lane Scholar means being a part of more than an institution, but being a part of a family where I can rely on my peers and my peers can rely on me,” he said. “However, it also brings a more challenging curriculum that can help me to grow into my passions and find my way into my professional career.”

Denton intends to major in biology but is uncertain whether he’ll follow a biology or biochemistry route. He said he plans to apply to medical school, including the Brody School of Medicine, after graduation.

“I want to be an emergency medical physician where I can connect with the local community and provide care for people at their most vulnerable times,” he said.

The Brinkley-Lane Scholars study-abroad stipend is a benefit that Denton plans to take advantage of. He has two locations in mind.

“I’m planning to go to Switzerland or Italy because of their highly ranked healthcare systems,” he said. “By traveling and exploring these systems I would be able to gain a holistic view on the ways that healthcare is able to be provided, which could aide me in my professional career.”

Before starting at ECU, he plans on obtaining his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and spending time with family. ECU’s campus EMS program and similar student organizations have Denton excited about getting on campus.

“I look forward to the clubs that ECU offers,” he said. “The campus EMS, future healthcare provider and other healthcare/service-related clubs fit exactly what I plan to do in my free time.”

Denton, 18, is the son of Amie Whitehead and Will Whitehead.

“Being a Brinkley-Lane Scholar means being part of more than an institution, but being part of a family where I can rely on my peers and my peers can rely on me.”
