Mal Oakley is a go-getter who likes to explore, is passionate about community, and in the future, wants to work as a child psychologist.

The 17-year-old daughter of Jodi and Jeffrey Oakley, she is one of 21 freshmen entering ECU this fall as a Brinkley-Lane Scholar. The scholar program, housed in the Honors College, is the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at the university. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills.

“Being a Brinkley-Lane Scholar means a commitment to success and leadership in any field you find yourself in, as well as being well-rounded to ensure the best experience both under and post-grad,” Oakley said.

Recipients receive a fully funded education that covers the cost of in- or out-of-state tuition, fees, room and board, and unique high-impact experiences. The award includes the ability to explore the world with a $5,000 study-abroad stipend and pursue additional educational opportunities with a $3,000 enrichment scholarship. Scholars benefit from access to an array of leadership opportunities, research with award-winning faculty and a robust alumni network.

Oakley said she chose ECU for the overwhelming sense of community she has experienced so far, as well as the incredible opportunities and commitment to success she feels the faculty and staff exhibit and will provide.

As a student at Topsail High School, Oakley is getting a head start in her college coursework by taking classes at Cape Fear Community College. This summer, she will receive her associate degree in science.

In her spare time, she has served as a youth referee for USA Lacrosse and worked for her family’s seafood market, Surf City Crab. In addition, she also works at New York Corner Deli, another locally run family restaurant on Topsail Beach. This summer, aside from her studies, Oakley plans to make every moment count by spending time at the beach, on a boat, and with friends and family.

While at ECU, Oakley looks forward to helping establish a local chapter of the Key Club. Key Club is the oldest and largest international, student-led high school service organization, focused on building leadership, character and community service. As part of the Kiwanis International family, members perform service projects — such as food drives and park cleanups — to serve schools and communities while developing leadership skills. Oakley said the organization has inspired her throughout her high school career.

In addition to her studies, Oakley will study abroad as part of the Brinkley-Lane Scholars, and she plans to spend that time in Australia.

“I have always been deeply interested in their history, especially ancient civilizations and art,” she said.

As a self-proclaimed outdoorsy person who loves trying new things, Oakley said she is excited to explore the different aspects the terrain has to offer.

“I have always admired the coastlines, people and ecosystem,” she said.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Oakley said she wants to continue her education and plans to pursue medical school at the Brody School of Medicine. Ultimately, she wants to become a child psychologist.

“I have always had a passion for working with children and the medical field,” she said.

“I chose ECU for the overwhelming sense of community as well as the incredible opportunities and commitment to success.”
