Brinkley-Lane Scholar: Anelise Herdman

For Anelise Herdman, a visit to East Carolina University turned a college search into a clear choice.
“I chose ECU because every time I visited campus, everyone was welcoming and so kind. I knew this was a place where I would be supported and thrive,” she said.
Herdman will be joining ECU this fall as a Brinkley-Lane Scholar, the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU.
“Being a Brinkley-Lane Scholar to me means being part of a close-knit, purpose-driven community while serving and making a meaningful impact in Greenville,” she said.
The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive a fully funded education, covering the cost of tuition, fees, room and board for both in-state and out-of-state students and unique high impact experiences, as well as the ability to explore the world with a $5,000 study abroad stipend. Scholars benefit from access to an array of leadership opportunities, research with award-winning faculty and a robust alumni network.
Herdman plans to study nutrition and dietetics with the goal of becoming a physician assistant, specializing in orthopedics or psychiatry.
“Throughout high school, I participated in a nursing-focused program where I became a certified nursing assistant (CNA). I gained clinical experience in a nursing home and a primary care office. I also enjoyed sports medicine and anatomy courses,” she said. “These experiences confirmed my goal of becoming a physician assistant.”
At ECU, Herdman hopes to continue her involvement in cheerleading. She is a three-time state champion, varsity cheer captain and member of her school’s student-athlete leadership council, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
Herdman is considering studying abroad in New Zealand or Italy.
“I am hoping to study abroad in New Zealand to learn about a different style of healthcare and explore a new culture,” she said. “I would also like to study in Tuscany because I have heard amazing things about the program and would love to explore as much of Europe as possible.”
Before starting classes, Herdman looks forward to spending time with family and friends, along with a two-week trip to Hawaii in July.
Herdman, 17, is the daughter of Daniella and Philip Herdman of New Market, Maryland.
