In February, ECU was placed in the top 5% of institutions in the nation recognized for having the highest level of research activity. Securing the Research 1 (R1) designation solidifies ECU’s status as one of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions.

Lifelong Pirates take advantage of distance learning to earn Doctor of Public Health degrees. Twins Linda and Brenda Sharpe serve as U.S. Navy commanders in Washington, D.C. and completed their doctoral degrees in May.

Richard Eakin, who served as ECU’s chancellor from 1987 to 2001, died June 2. During his tenure, the student body grew by nearly a third. At the same time, ECU’s research accomplishments were recognized in its Carnegie classification as a doctoral/research institution.
