RESIDENCE HALL MOVE-OUT INFORMATION

Per guidelines in accordance with the CDC and the University of North Carolina System, effective March 25, 2020, ECU will be closing its residence halls to students for the remainder of the semester.

View a Facebook live broadcast that details the move-out process.

This communication is intended to provide guidance to the move out process for students living in ECU residence halls. Please refer to the university communications sent on March 17, 2020 from Chancellor Ron Mitchelson and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Virginia Hardy regarding the overall plans for closing the residence halls for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester.

PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE STARTING PLANS TO MOVE OUT OF THE RESIDENCE HALL.

Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated as we work through this process over the next week or so.

This communication will provide three options for each student: 1) move out of the residence hall completely between March 19-25; 2) not return to campus and leave student’s belongings in the room until early May; or 3) apply for an exception to remain living in the residence halls.

Let us be very clear: You are NOT being forced to come back to the halls and move out. For people that have a long distance to travel, don’t want to travel at all due to exposure risks or want to practice safe social distancing, you do NOT have to move out of the residence halls at this time. In fact:

Let us explain each option a bit further to help answer some of your possible questions.  Regardless of your choice, you MUST complete the online form linked below.

RESIDENCE HALL STUDENT OPTIONS

Move out of the residence hall completely between March 19-25

  • If you do need to come back and move out, click the link below and select a day/time that you want to move out. It is strongly encouraged that you coordinate with parents, family or friends about the selection before you complete the form.
  • Note – If you do plan to come back to move out, we would strongly encourage using non-peak times (e.g. mornings, evenings) to complete the move out process.
  • Finally, you and any persons assisting with the move out process should not be currently experiencing any fever, cough or shortness of breath symptoms. Also, no person will be allowed on campus if they have recently traveled to CDC Level 3 countries or been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Not returning to campus and leave student’s belongings in their room until after May 1, 2020

  • Any students choosing not to move out of their room between March 19-25 will have their residence hall rooms secured by Campus Living staff.
  • Students will be contacted in the next several weeks about the process to be able to return to campus to complete the move out process.
  • Note: For health precautions, Campus Living staff will go through all rooms in every residence hall to dispose of items remaining in freezer/refrigerators.

Apply for an exception to remain living in the residence halls.

  • Some students have extraordinary circumstances that might require them to remain in the residence halls. ECU is hopeful that this number will be extremely low.
  • Students who want to stay will need to complete an application for an exception to stay that will be reviewed for approval based on the case-by-case circumstances.
  • Note – students that are approved with an exception may be moved out of their existing residence hall space and consolidated into one or two residence halls in one location on campus. Additionally, some campus resources will be very limited, and others will not be available at all during the remainder of the semester.
  • A modified meal plan will be offered to students remaining on campus. The details for this will be provided to all students approved to remain in the halls.

All residence hall students must complete the form linked in the email no later than Friday, March 20, 2020 at midnight.

Please remember that this process is being laid out for the safety of our students, faculty, staff and administration. ECU will continue to provide information to our students and our parents as we want to keep you informed.

Note: Many students and parents have asked questions about possible residence hall and dining refunds options. ECU is waiting for guidance from the UNC System, which manages all 16 university campuses in the system including ECU, to determine what actions will be taken. We have been informed that this decision is not expected from the UNC System Office until after the immediate issues related to COVID-19 are resolved. Update 4/3: Housing and Dining Refund Information.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters. As Pirates, we will weather this storm and come out stronger on the other side.
