Award-winning journalist, entrepreneur to visit ECU as Voyages premier lecturer

Soledad O’Brien, award-winning journalist and entrepreneur, will present “Diversity: On TV, Behind the Scenes and in our Lives,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 in Wright Auditorium at East Carolina University. O’Brien is presenting the premier lecture in the 2019-2020 Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences Voyages of Discovery Series.

Tickets are $25 for the public, $10 for ECU faculty and staff and $5 for youth (ages 16 and younger). Thecollege also will host a special access reception with O’Brien immediately before the event. Guests will have an opportunity to interact with O’Brien and enjoy refreshments in an intimate environment. The reception is limited to 80 guests and will include an autographed book, heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer.Tickets for receptions and lectures may be purchased online at www.ecu.edu/voyages.

O’Brien is the host of the Sunday morning syndicated political show “Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien,” which gives voice to the underserved and disenfranchised. As an entrepreneur and philanthropist, O’Brien founded PowHERful, a foundation that mentors and funds college tuition and expenses for young women.

“O’Brien celebrates the rich diversity that makes our country so wonderful,” said Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, director of the Voyages of Discovery Series. “O’Brien is the living embodiment of the American dream, of what is possible when opportunity is equally available.”
